2025 Summer Youth Production Auditions: Sideways Stories from Wayside School

The Broadview Heights Spotlights will hold auditions for its summer youth production (Ages 10 – 18) of Sideways Stories from Wayside School by John Olive. 

Auditions will take place on Friday, April 25 from 7:00PM – 9:30PM and Sunday, April 27 from 2:00PM – 4:30PM. Auditions should sign up for one of two time slots available on each day.

The play is based on three chapter books in the Wayside series by bestselling and Newberry Medal-winning author, Louis Sachar.   This production, directed by Calvin Adkins, is audition-based and does not have a registration fee or participation fee. It will rehearse on weeknights and weekends from May 27 – July 17.  The show runs on Fridays – Sundays for two weekends, July 18 – 27.

Auditions will consist of readings from the script and improvisational acting exercises.  Bring a list of conflicts between May 27 and July 27.  Please be sure to check school calendars for all end-of-the-year events including concerts, ceremonies, dinners, etc.  The rehearsal schedule will be built around the availability of those cast, with rehearsals being on weeknights and weekend afternoons.

Show Synopsis

Accidentally built sideways and standing thirty stories high (the builder said he was very sorry for the mistake), Wayside School has some of the wackiest classes in town, especially on the thirtieth floor. That’s where you’ll meet Bebe, the fastest draw in art class; John, who only reads upside down; Myron, the best class president ever; and Sammy, the new kid—he’s a real rat.  Enter the world of Wayside School in this wacky adaptation by Louis Sachar and laugh your way through a not so typical school day!
